Best Galanz Microwave Air Fryer: Models Compared and Reviewed

A combo unit promises one appliance where you now have two. That sounds great until you look at how little counter space you have left. We compared three Galanz models, from a compact 0.9 cu ft unit to a 1.6 cu ft family-size oven, and the differences are bigger than the spec sheets suggest. For a wider view of the category, see our air fryer reviews.

How We Tested These Galanz Microwave Air Fryers

We judged each Galanz on the things a combo unit has to get right: how well it crisps, how evenly it heats leftovers, how much counter it takes, how loud it runs, and how easy it is to clean. Performance counts first, then build quality and controls, then price.

For the 0.9 cu ft model, the foods that told us the most were frozen fries, wings, frozen dumplings, fried chicken, popcorn shrimp, and a bowl of mashed potatoes for reheating. For the 1.2 cu ft ToastWave, they were frozen shrimp, wings, bagels, toast, and dinner plates of leftovers. For the 1.6 cu ft SpeedWave we leaned on frozen pizza and everyday microwave and convection duty, because its air fry mode gave us little worth praising.

We held air fry results against what a standalone air fryer delivers, since that is the honest comparison. We also watched the parts that tend to fail first on any combo: door hardware, turntables, and controls.

4.3/5

This is the Galanz we would buy. It reheats evenly, crisps well enough for weeknights, and takes up the least room of the three, so it is the one that fits a small kitchen.

Pros

  • 900W with 11 power levels and true convection
  • Very even reheating
  • Smallest footprint of the Galanz group
  • Quiet in use
  • Easy-clean air fry kit included

Cons

  • Mediocre auto defrost
  • Plastic door hinge is a known failure point with no replacement part
  • Top of the cabinet runs hot in air fry

We started with frozen fries at 400 F, and they came out crispy and golden in about 11 minutes. Wings took about 25 minutes to get near-perfect. Frozen dumplings with a light oil coat crisped in about 8. Air fry runs a little weaker than a dedicated air fryer, so add 1 to 3 minutes to reach the same browning.

A bowl of mashed potatoes reheated very evenly, and the auto reheat setting kept plates from coming out over- or undercooked. Auto defrost of a pound of ground beef is only mediocre, so defrost meat by weight and check it. The door locks at start and needs an unlock press to open, which is one extra step. The unit is also quiet in use.

The ToastWave offers more functions than the faster-crisping 0.9 cu ft model, but its air frying is slow. Its air fry mode takes about twice as long as a dedicated air fryer.

Pros

  • Microwave, convection, air fry, and toaster oven in one
  • Roomy 1.2 cu ft cavity with 1000W
  • Sensor reheat handles plates and soup
  • Nonstick air fry tray and plate wipe clean easily
  • Upward-facing controls suit an under-counter shelf

Cons

  • Air fry takes about twice as long as a standalone
  • Turntable can stop rotating after one to two years of daily use, and one unit's carousel failed inside a year
  • Fiddly time dial and no dedicated start button
  • Dim interior light

After 18 minutes at 400 F, the frozen panko-coated shrimp were still cool or raw in the center. Wings can take up to 45 minutes. The manual gives longer air fry times than package directions, so expect to adjust every recipe.

Where it earns its place is everything else. The 1.2 cu ft cavity is roomy, sensor reheat handles dinner plates and soup well, and the bagel setting toasts a bagel in a few minutes. Toast takes longer than it does in a real toaster, and the interior light is too dim to see the food. The time setting moves in 10-second steps at first, then jumps to minute steps. Start works by pressing the time dial, which makes popcorn and small reheats fiddly.

3.5/5

If the ToastWave is the all-rounder, the SpeedWave is the specialist: a fine microwave and convection oven that happens to have an air fry mode. We used it the way it is best suited, for a frozen pizza and everyday microwave and convection work. The pizza baked well, and both the microwave and the convection oven did their jobs without fuss.

Pros

  • Largest cavity in the lineup at 1.6 cu ft
  • Microwave, convection, and frozen pizza all work well
  • Baking and roasting pan included

Cons

  • Air fry is slow with cold spots
  • Air fry heat can be capped lower than expected
  • Needs about 23 inches of counter depth

Air fry is the weak mode. It is slow, with cold spots, and the heat can top out lower than you would expect on some units. The maximum air fry temperature is not stated on the spec page and varies by model, so check before you count on 400 F crisping.

At 1.6 cu ft it has room for a family casserole, and it comes with a baking and roasting pan and a glass turntable. It is also the largest of the three, at 22.94 inches deep. Buy it for the microwave and convection oven, not for the air fryer.

Size, Capacity, and Countertop Fit

Measure before you buy, because these units are bulkier than a plain microwave. The 0.9 cu ft model measures 19 x 15.75 x 11.06 inches. It fits a truck cab cabinet, and it handles daily reheating and baking of meat loaf, pasta, cakes, and pot pie. The 1.2 cu ft ToastWave is 21.25 x 22.25 x 12.56 inches and needs a deep shelf of about 22 inches. The 1.6 cu ft SpeedWave goes to 22.94 inches deep.

Weight matters too. All three run between roughly 35 and 40 pounds, so plan a sturdy surface. The upward-facing controls on the ToastWave let it work under an island counter, and replacing an old microwave plus toaster freed real counter space. In a truly small kitchen, the 0.9 cu ft unit is the only one that does not crowd you.

How the Microwave and Air Fry Modes Perform

Microwave heating is where the Galanz units are strongest. Sensor reheat on the larger two handles plates and soup, and the SpeedWave's convection oven bakes a frozen pizza well.

Air fry is a mixed story. On the 0.9 cu ft model, fried chicken and popcorn shrimp came out with proper texture. The unit draws about 1300 watts even in air fry mode, which is worth knowing if your circuit is shared.

The larger models fall behind on crisping. If crisp food is your main goal, the 0.9 cu ft model is the only one we would pick.

Tip. Add 1 to 3 minutes to any air fryer recipe or package time when you use the 0.9 cu ft Galanz, and check food early the first few times.

Noise, Heat, and Ventilation

The 0.9 cu ft Galanz runs quietly. We have no measured decibel figures, so we can only describe it as quiet rather than give a number. The white LED display is too bright with no dimmer, which you will notice in a dark kitchen.

Heat is the bigger concern. The top of the 0.9 cu ft cabinet has a grill-style element that can burn a hand on first use, so keep hands and items off the top and sides. Leave breathing room around any combo unit and follow the clearance in your manual, which we did not verify for these models.

Warning. Keep the top and sides of the cabinet clear while air frying, and never store anything on top of the unit. Use only the supplied metal air fry rack in air fry mode, and check your manual for what else is allowed inside.

Pros and Cons of Galanz Combo Units

The per-model pros and cons are above. The larger question is whether a combo unit suits your kitchen at all.

A combo suits you when counter space is the constraint and you want one box to reheat, bake, and air fry the occasional batch. Replacing an old microwave and toaster oven is where the ToastWave in particular pays off. A combo does not suit you if crisp food is a nightly priority. A standalone air fryer crisps faster, and the Galanz air fry modes are a convenience, not a replacement.

It also does not suit you if you want easy repairs. Small plastic parts such as the door hinge and turntable are the first to fail, and the maker's replacement parts are limited, so a broken hinge can end the unit's life. Price is the last check. The 0.9 cu ft model sits around $100 to $110 at big-box retail, which is reasonable for the number of functions.

Cleaning and Maintenance

The nonstick air fry tray and microwave plate wipe clean easily. The easy-clean air fry kit on the 0.9 cu ft model helps, since cleanup is the reason many people give up on air frying.

After steamy food, leave the door open for a while so moisture can escape. Wipe the cavity after greasy batches, because back-cavity staining is common on combo units. Keep an eye on the turntable and door hinge, the two parts that fail first.

Galanz vs Toshiba, Cosori, and Other Alternatives

The closest rival is the Toshiba 4-in-1, at 1000W with a 13.6-inch turntable. Its air fry mode takes twice as long as a standalone air fryer and still fails to produce a crisp finish. Convection bake is the better mode for crispy results.

The back cavity stains within a month, and the cabinet gets very hot in air fry mode even with the recommended clearance. Units can fail after about two years. On the plus side it is very quiet with the buzzer muted. Pricing runs about $270, so it costs more than the Galanz 0.9 cu ft.

We did not include Panasonic or Cosori combo microwaves, since we could not line up a matching model from either. If you mainly want crisp food, a standalone or one of the best Ninja air fryer ovens may serve you better than any combo. For a standalone comparison, read air fryer vs. convection oven.

Buying Guide: What to Look For

Start with the counter. Measure width, depth, and height, then add the clearance your manual asks for. Next, decide how much air frying matters to you, because performance in that mode varies most between these units. Finally check the parts that wear: the door mechanism, the turntable, and the controls.

Tip. Buy through a retailer with a good return policy. Combo units are heavy, and you should confirm the fit and the air fry results in your own kitchen before the window closes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use the ToastWave under an island counter?

Yes, that is what its upward-facing controls are for. It still needs a deep shelf of about 22 inches, so measure the depth of the space first.

Do you need a dedicated circuit for it?

We have no manual clearance or circuit guidance for these models. The 0.9 cu ft unit draws about 1300 watts in air fry mode, so avoid sharing its outlet with another high-draw appliance and check your manual.

Can you use metal or foil in it?

Use only the metal air fry rack that comes with the unit, and only in air fry or convection modes. For anything else, such as foil or metal cookware, check your model's manual first.

What size Galanz microwave air fryer do I need?

The 0.9 cu ft model suits one to three people and small counters. Choose the 1.2 cu ft ToastWave if you want a toaster oven too, and the 1.6 cu ft SpeedWave only if you need the room and have about 23 inches of depth.

How does the Galanz compare with the Toshiba on price?

The Toshiba runs about $270, while the Galanz 0.9 cu ft model sits around $100 to $110. The Galanz costs far less, and the Toshiba air fry did not earn the difference.

Final Verdict

The top review above holds our pick. What it does not say is how the other two fit around it.

Buy it if

  • You want one appliance to reheat, air fry, and bake in a small kitchen
  • You can spare about 19 inches of width and 16 of depth
  • You want a toaster oven too and will live with slow air frying, in which case the ToastWave is the one

Skip it if

  • Crisp food every night is your priority, since a standalone air fryer does it faster
  • You have a very small counter and cannot leave clearance
  • You need a long-lived unit with easy repairs
