Bayou Classic Cast Iron Reversible Griddle Review: Cooking and Care

The Bayou Classic 7442 is a 14-in square cast iron plate with two faces. One side is flat for breakfast and sandwiches, and the other has raised ribs for steaks and chops.

We cooked on both faces to see how that idea holds up. If you are weighing it against other cookware for outdoor cooking, this review covers cooking, fit and care.

Quick Verdict: Who Is This Griddle For?

Key takeaway. Best for cooks who want one pre-seasoned plate for outdoor breakfasts and steaks; our full verdict is in the final section.

How We Tested the Bayou Classic Reversible Griddle

We judge cast iron by how well it cooks food and how much care it needs afterward. We cooked bacon, pancakes and eggs on the flat face, then flipped the plate for steaks and chops on the ribbed face.

We scored it on cooking versatility, fit, handling and care. Our rating reflects those hands-on impressions, not a lab score.

Which Bayou Classic Reversible Griddle Are You Buying?

Bayou Classic sells several reversible plates, and the model numbers are easy to mix up. We tested the square 7442. The 7447 is a rectangular plate advertised at 17.5 x 10.5 inches, and the 7428 is a large rectangular plate advertised at 28 x 14 inches. Check the model number before you order.

Flat Side vs. Grill Side: Features and Trade-Offs

Flat-Side Cooking for Breakfast, Burgers, and Sandwiches

The flat face handled bacon, pancakes and eggs without trouble on an outdoor burner. It also suits burgers and toasted sandwiches.

Cast iron holds heat but spreads it slowly. Holding heat does not mean the plate heats evenly, so we let it preheat gradually over medium heat.

Ribbed-Side Cooking and Grease Management

Flip the plate over for steaks and chops, and the raised ribs give you grill-style contact while the fat runs into the grooves. The reverse face worked well for steaks and chops during regular outdoor grilling.

Will It Fit Your Cooking Setup?

Fit is where you need to pay attention. The 14-in square plate can cook well on an outdoor grill, but it will not fit every grill.

Dimensions, Burner Coverage, and Compatibility

Published overall measurements disagree, because some listings count the handles and others measure only the cooking face. Leave extra room for the handles on your burner or grill. We cannot promise it covers two burners, and we have not confirmed clearance on any glass-top range.

Induction is a real question mark. The manufacturer advertises all cooktops, while at least one retailer lists the plate as not induction compatible. Confirm with your appliance maker before you try it.

Handling, Weight, and Storage

The plate is substantial to lift, and published weights run from 14 lb to 15 lb. Use insulated mitts, since the handles get hot. Allow more storage space than the 14-in name suggests.

Seasoning, Cleaning, and Everyday Care

Preparing the Cooking Surface

The factory corn-oil seasoning means the plate is ready after a wash and a thorough dry. We added a little extra cooking oil on the first cooks, as the manufacturer suggests.

Cleaning Both Sides and Preventing Rust

Cleaning the removable plate is easier than scrubbing an entire grill after cooking. Remove food, wash gently, dry completely, and rub on a thin film of oil before you store it. Occasional mild dish soap is fine, but keep it out of the dishwasher and skip routine abrasive scrubbing.

Warning. Rust from neglect is excluded from the 1-year limited warranty, so dry and oil the plate every time.

Pros

  • Two cooking surfaces from one plate
  • Pre-seasoned and ready after a wash
  • Lifts off the grill for easier cleanup

Cons

  • Heavy, with handles that add to the footprint
  • Slow to spread heat, so it needs a gradual preheat
  • Induction and glass-top fit are unconfirmed
  • Needs drying and oiling after every wash

4.2/5

We would buy the 7442 for a patio cooker because it handled breakfast on the flat face and steaks on the ribbed face, then cleaned up more easily than the grill underneath. Buy it for versatility and low cost, and check your cooktop fit first.

  • 14-in square plate
  • Corn-oil factory seasoning
  • Two cooking faces in one plate
