Most Cuisinart models here are Griddlers, which are contact grills that also open flat. Only the Indoor/Outdoor model is a traditional flat-top. The choice comes down to how your family eats. Griddlers press food from both sides and fold into panini presses, while a flat-top gives you one big open surface for batches. For recipe ideas on either type, see our electric griddle recipes.
Cooking surface and plate size
The Elite, Deluxe and Indoor/Outdoor all give you 240 sq in, which is the range a family of four or more needs. The Five is a step smaller at about 200 sq in, and the Compact falls to about 102 sq in.
Temperature range and control
The Indoor/Outdoor runs hottest, from 350F to 550F. The Elite and Deluxe offer a 500F sear function, and the Five and GR-6SNAS run 175F to 450F. The GR-4N tops out at 425F in griddle mode, and the Compact uses a low/med/high dial with no numbers. If you care about precision, the LCD models are the easier ones to read.
Nonstick coating and dishwasher-safe plates
The Elite, Deluxe, Five, GR-4N and Compact all have removable, dishwasher-safe plates. Listings for the Indoor/Outdoor and the GR-6SNAS do not state it, so check the manual before you load the dishwasher.
Cleanup and drip management
The Deluxe, GR-4N and Compact have removable drip trays, and the Indoor/Outdoor sends grease into a collection cup. Cleanup is usually two plates, one tray and a scraper.
