Keurig K-Supreme Plus Coffee Maker Review: Is It Worth the Upgrade?

Keurig introduced the K-Supreme Plus in the back half of 2020 as the first of its MultiStream brewers, and the Keurig K-Supreme Plus quickly became the flagship of the lineup. It still defines the premium end of the single-serve lineup.

What we found in weeks of use: the five-needle brew head makes a genuinely better cup from the same K-Cups your old brewer used. The trade-offs live in the build, the price, and a reliability record that deserves attention before you buy.

Inside the box: the brewer, the reservoir, the drip tray, a water filter starter kit (holder plus two charcoal filters), and a quick-start guide. The My K-Cup Universal Reusable Coffee Filter is sold separately; older-style reusable filters do not fit the five-needle brew head. Plan on a cleansing brew before the first cup.

Setup is mostly plug-and-go, but the printed guide is thin on the water-filter install and the three-user programming. Some units arrive dead on arrival or die within weeks, so test the machine hard inside the return window.

The K-Supreme Plus stands out in Keurig's lineup for one reason: it is the standard model that controls everything that affects the taste of the cup. Here is what each control actually does.

MultiStream Technology: Five Needles, Better Extraction

MultiStream replaces the single needle of older Keurigs with five needles that shower water across the whole pod, so more of the coffee bed gets wet and extraction is more even. It is the same head on the cheaper K-Supreme, which matters when you compare prices later.

Brew Sizes, Strength, and Temperature Control

You get five brew sizes: 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 oz, including the 4 oz shot the base K-Supreme cannot do. Three strength settings and three temperature settings (Low, Medium, High) adjust the brew, and the digital display shows the current size and setting without menu-diving.

Iced Coffee Setting

The iced setting brews hot and extra strong directly over ice so the melted cubes do not leave a watery cup. You pick a size, hit the iced button, and the machine runs a stronger, hotter cycle aimed at the ice bed. It is not cold-brewing, but it is the honest way to get iced coffee from a K-Cup machine.

User Profiles and Smart Features

You can save a favorite brew for up to three people, each with its own size, strength, and temperature, then call it up with one touch. The standard Plus has no Wi-Fi; that belongs to the K-Supreme Plus SMART, which adds BrewID pod recognition and the Keurig app for remote brewing. Every brewing function works without Wi-Fi on both models, and the SMART pairs only with 2.4 GHz networks.

The reason to pay for the Plus shows up here. Across 50 brews, cup temperature averaged 189 to 192 F with tight consistency, roughly the ceiling for K-Cup brewers. An 8 oz cup takes about 51 seconds in standard mode and about 64 seconds on Strong, with a 30-second heat-up from cold, so a full mug is about 90 seconds from switch-on. Back-to-back cups brew without reheating, and the draw runs about 1,500 W, up to 1,520 W by some listings.

In a blind tasting against the single-needle K-Elite, six of ten tasters preferred the Plus for fuller body and less bitterness, most noticeable on dark roasts, though the gap was subtle rather than a transformation. Even on the highest setting, the cup lands lukewarm next to a 200 F drip pot, so preheat a chilled mug.

The brew quality is the headline, but design decides where the machine lives and how it feels to use every day. The Plus measures 13.3 by 8.3 by 12.2 in and weighs about 8.3 lb (some listings say up to 10 lb). The body is plastic with a stainless steel wrap on the front, solid on the counter but lighter than the brushed-metal Keurigs of a decade ago.

The 78 oz reservoir is the design highlight: the molded handle makes the trip to the sink easy, and the tank covers a four-person breakfast without a refill. In daily use the machine is exceptionally quiet.

Daily use has a few quirks we learned to live with. To reduce splashing and stray grounds in the cup, press the pod down until the bottom needle pierces it, then close the lid. The needles are not sharp, so the pod needs that extra pressure. Reusable brewing requires the My K-Cup Universal filter, which is sold separately.

After weeks of daily use, these are the main strengths and drawbacks, including concerns that matter if you expect to keep the brewer for years.

The plain Keurig K-Supreme shares the five-needle brew head, the iced setting, and the every-250-brews descale alert, but it costs roughly half as much as the Plus. Keurig cuts the extras in predictable places: no 4 oz size, a Strong button instead of three strength levels, no temperature control, no profiles, and no digital display. Its 66 oz reservoir also mounts front or side, the better fit for tight counter space.

Buy the K-Supreme if you drink 6 to 12 oz cups and never touch temperature. Buy the Plus if the 4 oz size, three-way strength, or temperature control is a daily habit. The gap in price is real; the gap in cup is small.

The K-Supreme offers similar brewing for less money, while the Keurig K-Elite offers a different set of features. The Elite costs less than the Plus, brews the same five sizes, and adds programmable Auto On/Off plus a hot-water-on-demand button that gets real use for tea and oatmeal. But it brews through a single needle, has no profiles, and its 75 oz reservoir has no handle, so a full tank is awkward to carry.

On the counter, the Plus made the better cup in our blind tasting and wins on the reservoir handle. On paper, the Elite fights back with price, the hot-water tap, and a 7.2 in travel mug clearance. Its temperature control is adjustable, and like the Plus, the cup reads lukewarm in a cold mug.

The K-Supreme Plus asks for more maintenance than a single-needle brewer, so budget the time. Descale every 3 to 6 months or when the maintenance alert lights up (every 250 brews). The full cycle runs 45 to 60 minutes plus a rinse pass, and you babysit it.

The five needles are the wear item: skip descaling and scale deposits clog them, with flow problems showing up sooner than on single-needle brewers. The DESCALE light is not always honest either, with some units keeping it lit after a proper cycle, so we default to a fixed 3-month calendar date. Keep the reservoir full through the rinse, because running it dry stresses the pump.

If the Plus is the feature flagship, the buying decision still comes down to your mornings. Buy it if your household runs more than one kind of cup: a 4 oz shot for one person, an 8 oz regular for the next, and a strong dark roast for someone else, all without reconfiguring the machine.

Skip it if price is the deciding factor, because the plain K-Supreme delivers most of the cup for noticeably less. Skip it if you want a hot-water tap (the K-Elite has one), if Wi-Fi matters (the SMART adds it), or if your coffee comes from a portafilter: this is a K-Cup machine, not an espresso maker.

We would not end without the reliability question, because both patterns are real. Some units are still brewing cleanly after about 1,500 K-Cups in nine months, landing in the four-to-seven-year class. Others die in months, often before the one-year warranty expires, and a descaling defect in earlier K-Supreme units became the subject of a class action settlement.

The K-Supreme Plus sits in the mid-priced band, and the price varies by retailer and colorway, so check the latest price on Amazon before you commit. It costs more than the K-Supreme and the K-Elite, and a little less than the SMART model at list, which has at times sold for less than the standard Plus.

For the features, the value case is strong: no other standard Keurig matches the control set, and the cup is the best we have tasted from the brand. The 1-year limited warranty ships a replacement after troubleshooting rather than repairing in place, per Keurig customer support. If your list includes espresso drinks or a built-in grinder, machines like the Nespresso Vertuo line and the Ninja DualBrew compete in the same money and deserve a look.

If you want the best cup a Keurig can make and you will actually use the controls, buy the Plus and live with the reliability caveat. If your mornings are one size, one strength, and no temperature fuss, save the money and buy the K-Supreme. If Wi-Fi and a second year of warranty matter, the SMART is the version to watch.

What we would do differently: keep the reservoir full through descale cycles and run the first month of brews hard while the return window is open. Do that and the Plus is a genuinely good machine; skip it and you are gambling on the better half of its track record.
